Have you ever heard a word that caused you to pause and reflect? For most of us, inspiration comes in small, unexpected packages. Memories can be triggered by a scent, a song, a photo, and, yes, even word prompts.
My friend Beth Almond Ford, memoirist and teacher, recently commented on Facebook:
“Many (all?!) of us need words of inspiration to awaken our thoughts and dreams. I think that is why sermons, lectures, and, yes, podcasts are so popular. I’ve always told folks in my memoir writing workshops that my job is to stir and arouse the memories deep inside their minds by saying a keyword or phrase. Sometimes, they’d look at me like I was crazy when I’d say something like, “Write about an incident with a fish.” Yet, there would come ten different stories from the participants about fishing with grandpa, going to the aquarium with the great aunts, fish fry suppers, eating fish on Fridays, a visit to a trout pond, a deep sea adventure!”
The Power of a Single Word
Do you have a fish story? When I mention the word “fish,” perhaps you think of a lazy summer afternoon at the lake or the smell of fresh seafood on a beach vacation. But for the participants in Beth’s workshop, it became a gateway to deeply personal and varied stories. What makes word prompts so powerful in memoir storytelling is their ability to stir memories we didn’t realize we were holding onto.
The Ripple Effect: How Word Prompts Create Memory Trees
Single words or phrases act as seeds from which memory trees grow. Each branch represents a connected memory, and from those branches sprout smaller stories and details. Take the word “window.” When I was about four, my grandfather teased me by taking out his false teeth and chasing me with them. It was fall, and our screenless casement window was open. I jumped out of it (only a few feet to the ground!). That memory led to another branch: a story of sneaking out through a window as a teenager (I admit nothing) or the cold streaming through a window in my first apartment. The landlord refused to fix a broken window, so I taped a magazine over the section to keep the cold out.

These memory trees show how interconnected personal experiences are. A single word becomes the trunk of a tree laden with rich, personal narratives. As the tree grows, new branches form, peeling back layers of associated memories—from the sound of rain against the glass to the way sunlight highlighted the pages of your favorite book.
Building memory trees through word prompts isn’t just a creative exercise; it’s a way to map our lives, tracing connections we might not have realized existed. These trees become living documents of our personal histories, branching into stories that bring depth and texture to our understanding of ourselves and each other.
How to Use Word Prompts to Unearth Your Own Stories
You might be wondering how you can tap into this power for yourself. It’s simpler than you think. Here are a few tips:
Start with a Word: Choose a word that’s evocative but open-ended. It could be “fish,” “storm,” or even something as mundane as “chair.” Don’t overthink it.
Set the Scene: Find a quiet space, grab a notebook or laptop, and set a ten-minute timer. Let the word roll around in your mind and see where it takes you. The key here is free association—let your mind go where it will.
Trust the Process: Even if it feels silly at first, let the memories flow. Maybe you’ll start with a memory of your grandmother cooking fish sticks, but that might lead to a story about her kitchen, her laugh, or the songs she hummed while cooking.
Share Your Story: Once you’ve written your memory, consider sharing it with others. Join a story circle or a memoir-writing group. Sharing stories can deepen your connections and inspire others to share theirs.
Your Turn: What’s Your ‘Fish’ Story?
The beauty of storytelling is that it reminds us of who we are. Sometimes, all it takes is one word to spark a journey of rediscovery. So, what would you write if someone asked you to tell a fish story? Would it take you back to a childhood fishing trip, a bustling family dinner, or a quiet moment of reflection?
Whatever your story is, it’s worth telling. From fish to family, a world of memories is waiting to be uncovered. Take a deep breath, let the word guide you, and see where the ripples lead.
Thank you, Wayne! Excellent article- and “well put!”
Thanks for the inspiration, Beth!
